INVOCATION AND EVOCATION

What is the difference between Invocation and Evocation?

  • Evocation
    • calling forth
      • Traditionally, this is usually an attempt to summon a spirit or supernatural non-human entity to visible appearance.
  • Invocation
    • calling in
      • e.g. “Oh Lord, grant me a Mercedes and, patience, right now, Lord”. An extreme example of invocation might be being “ridden” by a Loa in Haitian Vodou, though this may occur without the explicit request of the devotee. Similarly, the practice of “speaking in tongues” (glossolalia) qualifies.
There’s a bit more to it than that, from the magical point of view, but in a nutshell, that’s it. Remember, other belief systems are available!
